Mike, what is your background
in the automotive industry?

I started as a trainee service writer and then became an installer in a two-bay shop in the back of a gas station. The first transmission I worked on was a 1958 Buick Dynaflow. Later, when they opened a second shop, I became the manager. After expanding to four stores, I became general manager. After 14 years, I became a junior partner, at which time we had five stores. The last three years I ran the company by myself with the other two partners doing other things.
After 19 years, I was bought out and became half owner in an automotive software company, Management Feedback Systems. Later, I bought out my partner and currently own it outright.
How did you get into the area of improving
management in auto repair shops?
While doing computer demonstrations I found that most people in this industry do not know the basic numbers they need to know to make a profit. Also, they do not know how to handle employees effectively, which costs them a lot. So I started to do talks for the Automotive Service Council (ASC), ASA, ATRA, etc.
Why should owners listen to you if
you are not presently running a shop?
Good question. Most people in this industry are not making as much money as they should because they lack knowledge, not ability. They will never find the knowledge they lack by running a shop. I learned in a shop only a small part of what I teach. Most of it comes from management training my partner and I got while we were struggling to make a profit. We applied what we learned to the shops and the management training caused us to boom, just like it does for our clients. If running the shop taught a person management, then nobody would need our services.

I started the company with a partner on March 1, 1993. From both of our experiences we agreed that the people of this industry are extremely honest and hard working, but most arent making the kind of money that they should and most are still being mechanics instead of businessmen. The reason for this is lack of knowledge. They know how to fix cars, but lack training in running a business.
So, we started a management company to give them the knowledge to run their businesses as effectively as they are able to fix cars. In 10 months we grew to 10 staff. We now have over 50 staff. We expand because what we do works.
